The Only Key To Happiness. (Everything Else Is Fake.)

I have an announcement to make: God wants you to be happy. In fact, I believe God has already lined up the right blessings, the right miracles, and the right people to bless your life.
Especially the right people.
Why right people?
Because God wants you to be happy by having happy relationships.
He really only has one strategy to make you happy. He has no backup plan in case it fails. It’s through happy relationships or bust.
If you don’t have happy relationships, you’ll never be happy.
No matter how rich you are.
No matter how religious you are.
No matter how much you achieve in life.
No matter how beautiful you are.
No matter how intelligent you get.
At the end of the day, your life is all about relationships.
In other words, your life is all about love.
That’s why the greatest commandments are about love.
Because He wants you to be happy.

Listen To Older People

When John Izzo interviewed 235 older people, he found out that their most common regret is not taking enough risks.
But what was the most painful regret?

7 reasons Why Saving Money Makes You Poor

How far would you drive to save 10 cents per gallon on gas? Some people will drive far away. Some people don’t pay any attention to how much gas costs and fill up wherever is convenient. But how much time does it take to get to that cheaper station?
So what’s the point? The point is that when we focus on saving money, we ignore the real costs. Because money is only one measure of value. We have other things that are far more valuable than money. These are time and effort.
Reason #6: Saving Ignores the Actual Costs
It’s very easy to spend a lot of time, energy and effort trying to save a small amount of money. For example, driving an extra 30 minutes to save money on gas gives us a very low return on our time and effort. Another example is people who spend two or three hours each day commuting to work. Besides costing money and gas, they have extended their working day by 20% or 30%. This in turn, robs them of time and energy that they could spend doing something productive.
On the flip side, there are things that people spend money on that consume all their time. The most popular is television. The person might say, well, I only paid $300 for the TV set. But actually, if you consider what the person could have done with the time that they spend watching, the cost is far greater. They could have built a business, become an investor, or gotten rich in any number of ways. They could have built the most popular blog on the Internet. The possibilities are endless.
So, what if we consider how much value we are actually getting when we save a few dollars? Perhaps we could ask, “Is it really worth spending the time and effort to keep this money?”

Growing Celery (High-Value Crops)

Celery is considered a cool-season crop. Scientifically named as Apium graveolens, this crop belongs to the family Umbelliferse or Parsley. This crop has a strong scent and has small white flowers.

Celery is primarily grown in Benguet and the Mt. Province. An estimated 687 hectares is currently used for growing celery in the aforementioned locations. It is currently considered as a minor crop in the Philippines. This crop has two varieties: the stalk variety and the Chinese variety. The stalk variety is often found in the highlands and is characterized by its thick petioles. Chinese celery variety is characterized by its strong taste and is often used in soups. Chinese celery variety is often found in lowlands or near the ocean.

Growing Celery

Both varieties of celery may be grown all year. However, celery may only be planted using the transplanting method.

Celery likes soil that is capable of retaining moisture and so soils that have had organic compost or manure are well suited.

During the hot season, celery should be planted on a seed bed one meter wide and fifteen cm high. During cold season, the seedbed should be thirty cm high.

Hay may be placed over the soil to protect the seeds. This keeps the soil from getting too dry which can cause problems in the plant growth. Use of hay also prevents the seeds from being drawn off during watering.

It takes two to three months before seeds grow into seedlings. At this time, seedlings may be transplanted to the plot. In transplanting, celery seedlings should be placed in two rows with rows 20cm apart and 40cm for each column.

Celery roots do not grow longer than 60 cm. Roots mostly grow 45 to 60 cm near the top of the ground. It is therefore important to use fertilizers to ensure that the crops get their needed nutrients especially when it is nearing its harvesting age.

Chicken manure may be mixed with complete fertilizer and administered 15-15-15 for every hectare. This may be followed with 150 to 200 kilos of ammonium sulfate two to three times every ten to fifteen days. Celery requires regular watering. Hay may also be used to cover soil in between the rows to keep the water from drying up as soil that is much too dry can cause lesser yield. Regular removal of weeds should also be done.

Celery is a vulnerable vegetable and needs utmost care in handling and growing. It is important to ensure that leaves do not get lesions during weeding, watering or applying insecticides. Insecticides should not be sprayed against wind direction to ensure safety.

Problems and Pests

Pests affecting celery are mostly insects like aphids, cutworms, and mites. These insects may be controlled by use of insecticides like Malathion and Sevin. It is highly important to follow the instructions on the label when using insecticides to ensure the safety of the vegetable.

New strains have helped combat much of the challenges of growing celery without toxins. Beware of slugs and snails, so put out traps.

Celery leaf spot, which shows as brown spots on the outer small leaves first before it spreads, can be avoided by checking your seedlings first before you plant and not watering the leaves. Otherwise an occasional organic fungal spray should do the trick.

Heart rot disease has mostly been bred out now, but do keep the moisture content even. Aphids and the little celery fly can sometimes visit, burrowing through the leaves, causing blisters to form. Pinch out the affected leaves and use an organic insecticide such as garlic to stop re-infestation.

Harvest and Storage

Celery has no strict or particular age for harvesting. However it is important to remember signs that indicate if the crop is ready for harvesting. Celery is ready for harvesting when it turns light green and when the leaves are lush.

Careful monitoring should be done in order to harvest celery at the right time. Lesser yield results when harvest is done too early. When done too late, celery yield may be of lesser quality.

Celery may be harvested by hand or by use of a sharp knife. Stalks should be cut near the roots to ensure that the petioles are still intact. Undesirable crops should be disposed.

Chinese celery should be harvested by removing the entire plant from the ground. Chinese celery should be harvested when it is twenty cm in height.

Return on Investment

Apart from being a constant ingredient in soups, celery is also known as a salad vegetable. The price of this vegetable varies primarily depending on its availability in the market. However, farmers gain notwithstanding its price.

Marketing

There are two ways to market celery. The first is through direct wholesale in which the crop is directly being bought from the farmer. Though this process, price of the vegetable is not directly affected by the demand in the market. The second is through retail selling in the markets or trading posts. This process allows the growers to adjust and recognize the prices according to the demand of the crop.

Production cost for growing celery is approximately Php15,000 per hectare, which can yield 160% return on investment. This is derived from a study of the Department of Agriculture, Administrative Region in the Cordilleras. With the yield of 1,300 kilos per hectare and the price of Php30 per kilo, the investment of Php 15,000 yields Php 24,000 net income.

Making Natural Laundry Bar and Powdered Detergent

Natural laundry bar soap is usually used in washing clothes. A good natural laundry bar soap has enough fat, lye and additives, which give it the ability to remove dirt and stains in clothes. The ingredients should be thoroughly mixed to produce quality laundry soap. The formula that we will use in this guide will produce 10kg of soap, hence, the amount of each ingredient recommended can be derived in percentage (%), and which can be applied to any amount of soap produced in large quantity. Note that caustic soda takes another preparation and is used as “lye”. Ingredients:

Quantity (grams) % to Total Weight
coconut oil 6050 60.5
lye 3700 37
CDEA 50 0.5
sodium silicate 50 0.5
lemon fragrance 50 0.5
soda ash 100 1
TOTAL 10,000 grams 100%
Note: Each 36°Be (Baume) lye concentration, lye solution uses:
  • caustic soda: 1.0 kg or 2kg
  • plus water: 2.5kg or 5g
  • total: 3.5kg or 7kg
Materials:
  • pail
  • stainless steel mixer and mixing tank
  • dipper
  • ladle
  • weighing scale
  • stove
  • graduated cylinder
  • thermometer
  • beaker or Erlenmeyer flask
  • dropper
  • stirring rod
  • funnel
  • hydrometer
  • mixing bowl
  • hand gloves and nose mask
  • katsa or cheese cloth
  • soap frame
Procedure: A. Preparing the lye solution:
  1. In a pail, slowly add 2kg of caustic soda in 5kg of water. Mix thoroughly. This mixture is the lye solution with 36°Be (Beume concentrate)
  2. Allow the lye solution to cool by dipping the pail in a bigger pail containing cold water. Continue stirring until lye solution cools.
  3. Using a hydrometer, check if the lye solution has reached the right concentration level, which should be 36°Be
B. Mixing the oil and lye solution:
  1. Weigh 3.7kg lye solution. Set aside.
  2. Measure 6.05kg coco oil and pour it into the mixer.
  3. Switch on the mixer. After a few minutes, pour the lye solution. Mix very well.
C. Adding other components as additives:
  1. When the oil and lye solution mixture has thickened, add 50 milligrams of coco diethanol amide or CDEA. Then add 100 grams soda ash.
  2. While mixing the ingredients continuously, add 50 grams of lemon fragrance.
  3. With a stirring rod, test the consistency of the mixture from time to time while mixing it continuously for 15-20 minutes or until the mixture becomes as thick as condensed milk.
  4. When the mixture reaches the right consistency, pour it evenly into the soap frame or mold lined with katsa cloth.
D. Hardening the soap before it is sliced:
  1. Let the soap stand in the frame overnight for the saponification process. The chemical elements added to the soap will take effect during this process.
  2. Wipe the soap once in a while with a rag to remove moisture.
  3. After 24 hours, slice the soap according to desired size and weight.
  4. The soap should only be used after 2-7 days when if has achieved the desired hardness and has passed the effects of caustic soda.
POWDERED DETERGENT The powdered detergent is a kind of soap, which is usually used in washing clothes and in cleaning. Powdered detergents easily dissolve in water, produce suds easily, and have abrasive strength that is not present in any ordinary laundry bar soap. These make powdered detergent popular for washing and cleaning. Among the different kinds of soap, the powdered detergent is the easiest to make. Its basic ingredients is dry soap chips, which can be bought by the kilo in soap factories. Soap chips are small pieces which have been pared off from laundry bar soaps. Soap chips can also be made by breaking into pieces or saving dried laundry bar soap. In making the powdered detergent, the 40% soap chips : 40% sodium sulfate : 20% STPP proportion or combination should be followed as guide in whatever volume desired. Ingredients (for 2 1/2 glasses of powdered detergent)

Quantity % to Total Weight
dry soap chips 1 glass 40
sodium sulfate 1 glass 40
STPP 1/2 glass 20
tergitol 1 ml 0.1
TOTAL 2 1/2 glasses 100%
Materials:
  • plastic glasses (for measuring the ingredients)
  • basin or mixing bowl
  • hand gloves
  • jar or container with lids
Procedure
  1. Shave or break into pieces a laundry bar soap to make one glass of dry soap chips. Prepare one glass of sodium phosphate. This will provide the so-called abrasive strength to the powdered detergent.
  2. Mix the dry soap chips and sodium phosphate in a basin. Add 1/2 glass of STPP to the mixture. The STPP will make the soap produce suds.
  3. Add 1 ml of tergitol to the mixture. This serves as binder for the powdered detergent so that it does not become very loose.
  4. Mix the ingredients well with your hands. Wear gloves to avoid any allergic reaction.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a jar with lid. Shake the jar to mix the ingredients well. Set aside. This is now your powdered detergent.

Healthy Benefits of Free-Range Chickens

If you have purchased eggs from a retailer recently, then you know that the most expensive eggs for sale are the ones known as “cage-free” or “free-range.” Why should these eggs have a higher value than the average commercial eggs?
Part of the reason for this higher value is because these eggs cost more money to produce; however, they are better, healthier eggs all the way around. They have a higher nutritional value and the hens themselves are healthier than the caged birds kept under artificial light and fed a steady commercial diet.
True free-range chickens are those that range outdoors on pasture. Meaning they do what all chickens do naturally: eat bugs, greens, and whatever leftovers they can scrounge or scratch up. The challenge for the homesteader, however, comes in the form of keeping and managing a flock of free-range chickens in order to reap the benefit of their eggs.
The nutritional value of free-range eggs makes this challenge a worthwhile endeavor for the homesteader wanting to produce higher quality eggs for a healthier diet. Recently, Mother Earth News did an egg study comparing free-range eggs to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data for commercial eggs. The findings showed that free-range chicken eggs produced the following results:
  • 1/3 less cholesterol
  • 1/4 less saturated fat
  • 2/3 more vitamin A
  • 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
  • 3 times more vitamin E
  • 7 times more beta-carotene
Besides the obvious nutritional benefits, free-range eggs simply taste better! The most likely cause of the differences between free-range eggs and those from caged, commercial-production hens is the diet the hens consume every day. Basically, you are what you eat. After all, the free-range chicken’s diet is all natural and varied, while the caged hen eats only what is placed in front of her.
Free-range hens are also usually healthier than their cousins kept in crowded cages in commercial poultry houses. The feeds given to commercial hens are the cheapest possible mixture of corn, soy, and/or cottonseed meals, with many types of additives mixed in. These additives often include growth hormones, meat and bone meals, as well as antibiotics and chemicals, like arsenic, to keep the chickens awake longer and producing more.
The commercial chicken has a much shorter lifespan due to stress, illness and general disease than does a free-range hen – unless, of course, the free-range hen falls prey to a natural predator.

Be true to how God made you.

Be true to how God made you.
Don’t try to be someone else.
Be the best that you can ever become.
Or else, Cherie Gil’s words will describe you (from an old Sharon Cuneta movie): “You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying-hard, copy-cat.”
Friend, God created you with a special gift. And only you can give this gift to the world. If you don’t become true to yourself, if you don’t give this gift to the world, the world becomes a lesser place.
Love yourself. Celebrate yourself. Be yourself.
Be true to how God created you.
In other words, follow your heart.
Follow your path.
Follow your calling.
Follow your destiny.
Unfortunately, very few people encouraged us to do this.

God Says Your Future Is Beautiful

God Says Your Future Is Beautiful

One day, Josh graduated from the Ateneo. He had many dreams and was excited about his future.
After the graduation ceremonies, he rode a cab.
The taxi driver greeted the young man, “How are you today?”
“I feel wonderful,” the new graduate said, extending his hand, “I’m Josh, Ateneo, batch 2010.”
“Congratulations!” the cab driver said, “I’m Carlos, Ateneo, batch 1976.”
(Note: This is a joke. I graduated from the Ateneo!)
Today, God Wants To Give You Hope
God wants to give you hope.
How? He’ll do it by giving you a peek into your future.
He’ll give you a glimpse of what’s coming next.
My message for you today is very simple: The last chapter of your life has been written, and it has a happy ending.
Obviously, you have to choose this happy ending.
It won’t happen if you don’t choose it.
But my point is that it’s available.
You can have a happy future.
Yes, you may be going through rough times now. Perhaps there’s a mountain of bills that you have to pay. Or the doctor’s report may not be good. Or there’s a conflict in your family. Or you may not be happy with your job.
Whatever it is, believe that you can have that happy future.

The Last Chapter Of Your Life Has Been Written,
And It Has A Happy Ending

Take the case of my friend Pablo.
Pablo has a problem: His girlfriend dumped him.
His friends told him, “Pablo, that’s just a small problem.”
But Pablo is collapsing under its crushing weight.
He feels that life is hopeless and wants to die.
To hide his identity, I won’t show you his photo.
Instead, I’ll just draw a caricature of Pablo…
As a kid, I used to draw a lot. 10% of my notebooks were class notes, and 90% were drawings.  (To mothers: When your little boys fill their notebooks with drawings, don’t stop them. They may become preachers one day!)

But one day, someone invited Pablo to the Feast. (That’s what we call our weekly prayer gathering because it’s feels like a party. If you want to join us, click here or email feastsecretariat@yahoo.com.) And he was hooked. He never left.
Each week, he heard God’s Word.
After 6 months, Pablo’s life has totally changed.
But ironically, he now has more problems!
First, he still doesn’t have a girlfriend.
Second, the company he’s working for is in bad shape and may close down soon.
Third, his parents are fighting over money again.
Fourth, his pimples are acting up.
       But here’s a caricature of Pablo after 6 months…

       Pablo has more problems today.
       Yet he’s smiling!
       How come?
       He’s got more problems now.
       He should be crying more.
       But he’s not.
       Here’s the reason…

There’s only one difference between the two drawings: In the past months, Pablo has grown in Hope.
He knows that his problems are temporary. He knows that his future is brighter than his past. He knows that in the end, he will win the victory.
Happiness Has Nothing To Do
With The Absence Of Problems
Do you want to be happy?
Being happy doesn’t have anything to do with the size of your problems. Being happy has everything to do with the size of your hope. And that’s what you receive from God.
Friend, are you like Pablo?
Are you burdened with a long list of problems?
Having many problems isn’t the problem.
Losing your hope is the problem.
Don’t give up.
Don’t lose hope.
Because when you lose hope, you lose life.
Pablo is smiling because he has hope.
He knows something He didn’t know before: That God finishes what he starts.
Listen to God in your heart. He is speaking to your heart and saying, “The last chapter of your life has been written, it has a happy ending.”
The Power Of Hope To Bless Your Life
Hope is underrated.
The Bible says that between faith, hope, and love, love is the most important thing in the world. And I agree.
And faith? It’s essential to salvation.
So where does hope come in? A nice third class bonus.
They also say that in Heaven, you don’t need hope anymore.
But that’s precisely the point: We’re not yet in Heaven. (Just to check, pinch yourself. If you experience pain, you’re not yet there.)
On planet earth, hope is crucial for survival.
In fact, it’s crucial for any kind of success.
Do You Have More Problems
When You Grow Closer To God?
One day, Pablo asked me, “Bo, why is it that when I grew closer to God, I now have more problems. Is this a test from God? Or is this harassment from the devil?”
I told him, “Neither. I believe you’re experiencing a normal life. Because problems are a part of life. I believe you’ll have problems whether you’re near to God or far from God. Your choice is this: Will you go carry your problems with hope or will you carry your problems without hope?”
Pablo almost shouted, “With hope!”
And that’s what happens when people join the Feast every week. They go home from the Feast with overflowing hope in their hearts. In other words, they receive a “Taboric” experience…
Jesus Lifted The Curtain
Between Heaven And Earth
One day, Jesus brought Peter, James, and John to Mount Tabor. When they reached the top, a powerful transfiguration happened.
They saw Jesus shining with brilliant light.
And beside him were Moses and Elijah, also glowing.
It was so powerful, Peter said, “Jesus! Let’s build 3 tents. One for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
He didn’t know what he was saying.
The vision was so mind-boggling, he was speaking gibberish.
Because on Mt. Tabor, Jesus lifted up the curtain that divided heaven and earth.
Here’s my question: Why did Jesus do that?
       To show off? Not likely.
He did this to give them hope.
Jesus knew that after they go down from Mount Tabor, life would be tough. His disciples will see Jesus bloodied up. Beaten with whips. Slaughtered as a criminal. They’ll see him die on the cross.
So in Mount Tabor, Jesus gave them a peek of the future.
He gave them a glimpse of the last chapter.
He was telling them, “The last chapter of your life is written, and it has a happy ending.”
You Need Taboric Experiences In Your Life
I feel each Feast is a Taboric experience.
In our weekly Feast, people meet God. They hear God’s Word. They go home with great hope in their hearts.
Because in the Feast, people get a taste of their future.
Below is a photo of a regular telescope.

Do you know that Hope is also a telescope?
It is. But it’s a very special one.
Instead of looking through space, it looks through time.
Hope is a “time” telescope.
       It sees the future.
Hope whispers to your heart, “Your future is beautiful. You will win. You will overcome.”
“You’ll Never Be A Speaker”
I will never forget this one difficult moment in my life.
I was fourteen years old, already giving talks here and there in different prayer groups.
One day, I was invited to speak in a seminar.
There were less than 20 people in the audience.
But when I stood in front of them, I didn’t know why, but I felt so self-conscious. I felt nervous and began to sweat. And my talk bombed.
After I spoke for less than 20 minutes, I sat down. I felt so ashamed at what I did.
It didn’t help when the organizer stood up and said, “What Bo was trying to say was this…”  He then proceeded to give my talk all over again.
After the seminar, he came up to me and said, “Bo, I think you shouldn’t be speaking in seminars like these.”
       Ouch.
In my mind, I heard a voice say, “I knew it. Who am I fooling? I’ll never be a speaker.”
That day, I basically gave up on myself. I was thinking of just refusing the invitations I was receiving.
But when I went back to my little prayer group, my prayer group leader, Aida Manongdo, never gave up on me.   Perhaps she sensed I was feeling down. She called me aside and said, “Bo, I have something to tell you.”
She said, “Bo, God spoke to me again. He said you really have an anointing. One day, you’ll be preaching in many countries all over the world.”
What was she doing? She was giving me hope.
She was saying, “God will finish what He has started. The last chapter of your life has been written, and it has a happy ending.”
Today, those words have come true.
For 31 years now, I’ve been preaching in over 20 countries.
When you’re feeling down and about to give up, I now realize that God will send an Aida to you who will give you hope.
I’m that Aida to you now.
God has sent me to tell you that your future is brighter than your past. You may be in a Good Friday right now but I’m telling you that your Easter Sunday is coming. You will have a happy ending. You will have a glorious future.

What Kind Of Person Are You?
Let me end with one last word.
There are two kinds of people in the world: People who give hope and people who take away hope.
What kind of person are you?
When you relate with your kids, do you give hope? Are you like Jesus who lifts the “curtain” between his present and bright future? Do you tell your child, “The last chapter of your life has been written, and has a happy ending.”
Today, I want you to receive hope.
And be like Jesus.
Give hope.
May your dreams come true,
Bo Sanchez
