Convergys, to hire 3,600 more employees this year

Convergys Corp., the largest private employer in the Philippines, is planning to hire additional 3,600 new employees as it expands its five existing sites in the country to bring their total number of workforce to 25,000 by the end of 2010. Marife Zamora, country manager of Convergys Philippines, said the expansion is meant to meet the robust demand of its clients, who belong to the top Fortune 50 list of global firms.

“Drawing upon the outstanding service and support Convergys employees in the Philippines provide to our clients around the globe, in addition to the continued demand from these clients to house their customer support in the Philippines, it was only logical that we expand our existing capacities,” Zamora said.

At present, Convergys has 12 sites in the Philippines. Seven are in Metro Manila, three in Cebu City, one in Bacolod City and one in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. The five Convergys sites with expanded capacities are: UP TechnoHub in Diliman, Quezon City; Nuvali in Laguna; San Lazaro in Sta. Cruz, Manila; Cebu i3 in AsiaTown Cebu, and Bacolod. These sites would require 2,300 additional work stations for 3,600 workers.

$18 million alloted by Canada to help create jobs in the Philippines

The Canadian government has allotted $18 million in development assistance to help foster job creation in poor municipalities in the Philippines.

This was announced by Canadian Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway Stockwell Day. “We are concluding or announcing the $18 million Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) assistance to work with a number of municipalities to assist them in trading and enhance business atmosphere,” Day said.

He was in the country over the last weekend for the celebration of the 60th bilateral relations between Canada and the Philippines.

The Canadian trade minister said the financial would focus on poor municipal areas, particularly those hardest hit by the recent typhoons in Luzon. “It will have a ripple effect because people in those areas will have opportunities like how to incubate a small business and allow them to grow. We will monitor it and there will be corresponding jobs… geared to opening up the business climate,” Day said.

Jollibee most admired company in RP: WSJ Asia

MANILA - Fastfood giant Jollibee Foods Corp. (JFC) is the most admired company in the Philippines, according to the annual Wall Street Journal Asia 200 survey.

JFC ranked number one in terms of corporate reputation and innovation, earning the votes of the publication's subscribers as well as top businessmen. The company edged out property developer Ayala Land Inc., which dropped to the third spot after its parent firm Ayala Corp. moved up to second place.

The survey cited affordability and accessibility as major factors in helping JFC claim the top spot. To date, the corporation already has 1,825 stores, including 307 overseas.

"With its consistently high-quality food at value prices, the various brands under JFC became the top choice of more consumers trading down from expensive restaurants. These are customers who have foregone their fine dining fixes to enjoy more value-for-money fare at any of JFC's quick service restaurants," JFC said in a statement.

"Jollibee is a barometer for the Philippine economy," JFC added, citing ATR KimEng economist Luz Lorenzo.

Other companies who made it in the list were diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corp., which landed in the fourth spot, followed by Bank of the Philippine Islands, Globe Telecom Inc., Banco de Oro Unibank Inc., Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., SM Prime Holdings, and Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co.

JFC reported a 17.2-percent rise in earnings for the first three months of the year to P562 million from P480 million in the same period last year. Its system-wide sales, on the other hand, grew 13.8 percent to P15.1 billion.

Jollibee donates P18-M to support Filipino children

Fast food giant Jollibee Foods Corp. has committed P18 million in cash and kind this year to support selected foundations for Filipino children.

According to Jollibee, the amount was raised from sales of "Hug and Share" dolls--its 30th anniversary novelty offering--and the company's annual "MaAga ang Pasko" toy and book collection drive.

"We are very thankful to everyone who supported this project by buying the Hug and Share dolls. This donation would not have been possible without their gift of love to these kids," Jollibee Franchisees Association (JFA) chairman George de Guzman said in a statement.

The P18-million donation will be extended to eight organizations at the Manila Ocean Park on Wednesday. Some of the recipients include the Cottolengo Filipino (for abandoned children), House With No Steps (for physically disabled children), Marcellin Project (for juvenile delinquents), and Shontoug Foundation (promotes indigenous culture in children).

It will also benefit scholars of the JFA through ERDA Tech; support learning initiatives for urban poor children of Paco, Manila through the Families and Children for Empowerment and Development Foundation; establish the Jollibee Foundation Wellness Center for Children at the Philippine Children's Medical Center; and feed less-fortunate school children in Leyte through Jollibee's "Busog, Lusog, Talino" program.

"We initiated this project as our way of saying thank you to all who made Jollibee what it is today. We want to share our success by giving back to Filipino children who have patronized Jollibee products together with their families," de Guzman said.

DILG chief favors mandatory drug testing for those in govt

Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo on Friday said if he will have his way, he will subject all state employees to a mandatory drug test.

"Palagay ko nga po lahat ng mga nasa gobyerno mag-drug test (I think everyone in the government should undergo a drug test)," Robredo told GMANews.TV during the Metro Manila Business Conference at the Manila Hotel on Friday.

Robredo issued the statement after Senate Majority Leader Vicente "Tito" Sotto III encouraged public officials to undergo illegal drugs testing.

Sotto voluntarily underwent a drug test and tested negative earlier in the week.

Robredo agreed with Sotto, saying that if government employees and officials want to set a good example to the public, they will follow his suggestion.

"Sabi nga po nila hindi mo pwedeng hingin ang hindi ikaw (Like they say, you cannot ask others to be what you are not)," he said.

Robredo likewise said that when he was mayor of Naga City in Bicol, he underwent a drug test, adding that the local government's police officers had also undergone random drug testing.

"Palagay ko wala naman pong masama na i-subject namin ang sarili namin sa drug test (I don't think there is anything wrong in subjecting ourselves to drug tests)," he said.

Talks bout drug testing among government officials became louder after Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson (1st District) was arrested in Hong Kong last July 11 for allegedly possessing 26.1 grams of cocaine and two tablets of prescription medication Valium.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had deemed unconstitutional the mandatory nature of illegal drugs testing for candidates running for public office.

On Thursday, Malacañang said it was open to the idea of its officials undergoing drug tests in light of Singson's arrest in Hong Kong over drug charges.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said President Benigno Aquino III will let heads of agencies in the executive branch tell their employees to undergo drug testing if they find it necessary. (See: Palace open to drug test for officials) — RSJ/LBG, GMANews.TV

Randolph Cabangbang, spokesman for Army's Eastern Mindanao Command, said undetermined number of New Peoples Army launched attack by firing their high powered weapons on the post of 23rd Battalion in the village of Lianga in Butuan City, the regional center of the Caraga Region in southern Philippines.

Troops managed to defend their position but a militia was killed in an hour-long gun fighting with NPA guerrillas.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades.

The military estimates the NPA strength at more than 4,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country. (philstar.com) Updated July 30, 2010 08:10 PM

3 soldiers wounded in clash with leftist rebels in Davao

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) - At least three soldiers were wounded following a clash with suspected leftist rebels in this southern Philippine city early today, the military said.

Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang, spokesperson of the military's Eastern Mindanao Command said the incident happened at around 7:30 a.m. when patrolling troops from the army's 39th Infantry Battalion clashed with New People's Army guerrillas in upland Paquibato district.

Helicopter gunships from the Philippine Air Force 11th Tactical Operations Group provided rocket fire as the gun battle dragged on for more than 30 minutes, Lieutenant Colonel Aniano Orap-orap, battalion commander, told Xinhua by phone.

"We are still conducting clearing operations in the area as we received reports an NPA rebel was also killed," Orap-orap said, adding the wounded soldiers were flown by helicopter to a regional military hospital at the city proper.

The 4,000-strong NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is fighting a 41-year leftist insurgency in 60 of the Philippines' 80 provinces. (philstar.com) Updated July 30, 2010 07:01 PM

U.S. to start implementing "precision" missiles in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) -- The United States has started implementing a program aiming to prove the precision capability of Philippine military aircraft and help the country in its fight against terrorist groups and other armed groups, the Philippine defense department said today.
"It's a program for the enhancement of the precision capabilities of the aircraft that is supporting our ground troops in the South. So the equipment that will be provided will be basically some software and other equipment which will allow us to perform this enhanced precision capability for the Air Force basically," Department of National Defense spokesman Eduardo Batac.

The 4 million U.S.-dollar project, inclusive of softwares, will be installed to OV-10 planes used by the military in dropping bombs and firing rockets at enemy positions.

The Philippine air force currently has OV10s although only 10 are operational. Batac stopped short of saying how many aircraft will be equipped with the system.

But once completed, Batac said, the aircraft equipped with enhanced precision capabilities can deliver munitions on the enemy even when there is limited visibility (philstar.com)

Government plans tax-exempt peso global bonds

MANILA, Philippines - The government wants to exempt from tax the planned peso-denominated global bonds it wants to issue this year to make the instrument more attractive to investors, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said yesterday.

National Treasurer Roberto Tan said the structure will be similar to the usual global bonds issued by the government, under which the foreign investor is exempt from tax payments as an incentive.

“It may follow the structure of a global bond but denominated in pesos (wherein) tax on foreign investor is assumed by the issuer just like the structure of dollar bonds,” Tan said.

The Aquino administration wants to issue peso-denominated bonds this year to cushion the economy from foreign exchange fluctuations and to take advantage of the general weakness of the dollar and the euro. The move is part of the government’s plan to manage the liabilities of the government.

Analysts said peso-denominated bonds are currently an attractive option for investors given the optimism on the new government and the general weakness of the dollar and the euro.

The Aquino government is looking at borrowing an additional P57.8 billion from domestic and foreign debt markets this year to fund a higher budget deficit of P325 billion, data from the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) showed.

As such, the government is now eyeing to borrow P254.8 billion from external sources, or P34.3 billion higher than the original borrowing program of P220.5 billion, data also showed.

Similarly, the government will also borrow more from the domestic market this year, amounting to P511.6 billion or P23.5 billion more than the original borrowing program of P488.1 billion.

The plan to sell peso-denominated global bonds will come after the sale of roughly P20 to P30 billion worth of retail Treasury bonds (RTBs) slated in August. Banking sources said the government is looking at selling seven- and 10-year RTBs, starting with a possible price-setting auction on Aug. 10.

Earlier, the Development Budget Coordination Committee, the interagency group that sets the country’s macroeconomic assumptions, revised the budget gap to P325 billion from roughly P300 billion previously.

Despite a widening deficit ceiling for this year to P325 billion, the new economic team plans to cut the deficit to 3.3 percent of GDP next year and two percent in 2013 from this year’s 3.9 percent.

The Beer Drinker's Guide: beer, food and other fine things in life

I. How to enjoy your San Miguel Lifestyle Brew
First, it is okay to drink from the bottle, can or glass. Before pouring the beer into the glass, make sure that it is "beer - clean".

Second, Beer is best served without ice for you to experience the full flavor of beer.

Third, the beer bottle should not be shaken prior to opening. This is because a beer bottle or can that has been shaken will spurt and overflow.

Fourth, when pouring beer into a glass, tilt the glass at a slight angle and pour the beer slowly into the sides until up to 2/5 of the way. Finish pouring with the straightening of the glass. A frothy head should appear just a little above the rim of the glass. Beer should be served with a head or foam.

Fifth, San Miguel Lifestyle Brews can be served two ways, both with its own distinct advantage:

A. Below 0ºC – Beers at these sub-zero temperatures are very refreshing and are very smooth on the palate. The beer, however, should not be frozen.

B. At 3 – 6ºC – Beers at this temperature range are also refreshing. At these temperatures, the full flavor of the beer can be tasted and appreciated

II. Drinking your San Miguel Lifestyle Brew in four easy steps.

Step 1. Swirl the beer in the glass slowly by doing this the volatiles and aromatics will change from liquid to gas, carried by the carbon dioxide.

Step 2. Take the glass to your nose and take quick “rabbit sniffs” followed by long sniffs. As you do so you will appreciate the fruity, floral, hoppy, and malty notes of the beer.

Step 3. Take a sip. Let the amber liquid slide over your palate a little slowly. Swirl it over your tongue and inhale a bit. You will taste the sweetness imparted by the malt and the refreshing bitterness imparted by the hops. You will also feel the sparkling mouth feel or the bite of the carbonation and the fullness or lightness of the body of the beer

Step 4. Swallow the beer. Feel the sensation after the beer has been swallowed. You will perceive the smoothness of the beer and its throat-warming effect.http://www.sanmiguellifestylebrews.com/images/banner_brewmaster.jpg

The Magic of Batanes Isles (Part 2 of 2)

The Magic of Batanes Isles
La Isla Magazine, July 2010 Cover Story

Read First: The Magic of Batanes Isles (Part 1 of 2)
Sabtang Island

Chamantad Viewpoint, Sabtang Island. Photo by George Tapan.
Sabtang Island is 30-45 minutes away from Batan Island via a falowa ride. The falowa is a U-haul boat designed with no balancing beam called katig, so that it can freely dance with the waves. Between Batan and Sabtang is the channel where the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea meet. In this channel, you can see the waves flowing in different directions, and this is where most people get seasick with the falowa's rocking motion.
Once you arrive in Sabtang and see the heritage towns of Savidug and Chavayan, you will realize that bearing with the rocky falowa trip was worth it. These two areas are the remaining coastal towns composed predominantly of the stone houses Batanes is known for. The houses have walls that are made from stones bonded with lime and their roofs are made from cogon. These towns are next in line for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List in the Philippines.

Valugan bay boulder beach, one of the favorite spots around the island. Photo by George Tapan.
Chavayan is the most loved heritage town of all, not only because of the intact stone houses but also because of the cute kids with anime eyes, and the vakul (traditional headdress used for planting root crop) weaving community.
In between the towns of Savidug and Chavayan is the Chamantad viewpoint, which can literally take your breath away. Some people remark that the grassland, mountain and seascape view remind them of Ireland. Most just appreciate the view in silence – in awe of the grandeur of Nature’s beauty and God’s creation.
You can end your day trip to Sabtang with an authentic Ivatan fresh seafood lunch along the beach. A simple serving of the fresh catch of the day, together with either lobsters or coconut crabs, will make the meal quite memorable. The beach is now more famous because of the natural arc formation found there (as shown in the movie, Batanes). After lunch, some people lie down for siesta along the beach or take a dip in the waters for a while. It is a bit rocky, though, because of the coral base.
Itbayat Island

Batanes Hedgerows. Photo by George Tapan.
Itbayat is the biggest of all the islands. Some say that it was the first to be inhabited and it was made from corals that were pushed up from the sea. That could explain why there are no beaches there. Instead, Itbayat is home to magnificent cliffs and rock formations.
To get there from Batan, you can ride a bigger falowa (compared to the ones traveling to Sabtang). The trip can take around 3 hours and the waves encountered are much bigger. If you sit on the roof of the falowa, you will literally see the boat swaying almost 95 degrees from side to side. The boatmen give out plastic bags before traveling (so I guess getting seasick on the trip is already normal). The prime seats are those located beside the window so that you can still look out and see the horizon to avoid dizziness – or you can easily throw up into the sea.
Most Ivatans are fisherfolk by occupation. One of the popular ways they fish is they tie a long fish line in the falowa and then put the hook with fake bait into the sea. Consider it an extra treat if you see an actual fish caught using this method during your boat ride. If successful, the entire crew would clean the fish later on and eat it sashimi- or kilawin-style with chili vinegar. J

Docking in Itbayat is an experience in itself, where there are no beaches, bays or harbors. The designated port has a steep ramp where a clever pulley system was devised to lift the goods from the port to the elevated road. There are stairs paved on the sides of the ramp for pedestrians to climb. Modes of transportation going to the central town are a bit rustic, and life on Itbayat is simple and laid-back compared to the other islands.
A hike to the highest viewpoint on the island; caving in Torongan cave – an ancient dwelling place with a burial ground on top; and visiting the old town of Raele are the adventures that await the more daring visitors to the island. The houses in the town center are a bit modern already, but in Raele, you can see the stone houses built with rocks from crushed coral stones (since there is no source of boulder rocks on the island). A 2-3 day trip is ideal when exploring Itbayat.
Yummy Ivatan Food

Flavors of Batanes. Photo by George Tapan.
Aside from the natural beauty of the islands, the magic of Batanes can also be found in its organic food.
You’ll discover just how yummy organic food can be when you are served the Ivatan platter with all the fresh vegetables available on the island, such as fern salad, ampalaya, tomatoes, onions, eggplant, and okra with bagoong. The vegetables taste sweeter than usual and are pleasant to eat – even non-vegetable lovers rave about them.
Ivatans are proud of their food, which are usually home-cooked and prepared by the Ivatans themselves. Their authentic dishes are often enjoyed with a big fruit-tree leaf called Kabaya and are scooped up using the hands.
The turmeric rice made with fresh yellow ginger (sometimes, turmeric powder is used already) is always a treat to eat in every meal in Batanes. My favorite Ivatan dishes are the steamed Uvud balls made from banana heart mixed with meat; Lunez, their crispy and dried adobo version; and Venus, which is made from gabi stalks.

Dried dorado at Diura Fishing Village. Photo by George Tapan.
For special occasions, the Ivatans prepare kinilaw (raw fish meat from the fresh catch of the day), uni (sea urchins) and snails. Lobsters are also served to special guests and, occasionally, the tasty meat of coconut crabs. These crabs, called tatus, are already on the endangered list and are only allowed to be consumed locally.
Most of the Ivatan meals are served with freshly harvested root crops, like kamote, cassava or gabi. One particular root crop called dukay, which is white in color, is used as the main ingredient for Dukay Salad (which is fresh fruit and dukay, mixed with cream). If you visit Batanes, you should not miss trying their kamote – it's very sweet.
The beef in Batanes, when cooked, is very soft and tasty. It is ideal for dishes like Tapa, Bulalo, and my favorite Inihaw na Crispy Tadyang ng Baka. Tes of Pension Ivatan prepares the best beef dishes on the island, and you can take some beef home as pasalubong. Only pork and chicken are allowed to be imported from Manila, while the beef is 100% sourced from Batanes. You can see the cows grazing freely and happily around the vast grasslands, only eating natural and organic grass and vegetables.
Fundacion Pacita Abad

Blue chairs at Fundacion Pacita terrace look out peacefully towards the sea. Photo by George Tapan.
In recent years, Fundacion Pacita added its own magic to the overall Batanes experience. It is one of the best boutique hotels in the Philippines with a "Wuthering Heights” ambiance as it is located on top of a cliff with a 270-degree view of the sea, mountains and the sky. In December, this is one of the only places where you can feel it's "winter" in a tropical paradise like the Philippines.
This Batanes resort on top of a rolling hill was once the home studio of internationally acclaimed artist Pacita Abad. She's known for her larger-than-life, colorful mural paintings. One of her latest works was painting a modern pedestrian bridge called The Alkaff Bridge (it crosses the Singapore River at Robertson Quay) with playful colors.
The Fundacion Pacita Batanes Nature Lodge has a country-style charm in a lush garden setting. Its signature terrace rooms with blue chairs look out peacefully towards the sea. Each room was designed to resemble a gallery with works from well-known and up-and-coming artists.

The foundation supports the education of young Ivatan artists and the heritage conservation projects in Batanes. Among its artist beneficiaries are:
Olan Gonzales, who is the lead painter in the Tukon Chapel ceiling project;
Mahatao-born Jaypee Portez;
Xavier Abelador, a representational and surrealist painter; and
Itbatyat artist Javier Ponce.
The artworks of these young Ivatan artists are appreciated locally and recognized internationally by art collectors and enthusiasts. Some of their works are sold on Ebay and they have a couple of major commissioned projects also. You can see the tribute painting they created at the entrance of the Fundacion Pacita Batanes Nature Lodge. Pacita Abad’s insignia is located in the center, and each quadrant is painted with the young Ivatan artists’ own interpretation and tribute to the master artist who inspired them.

The Proud Ivatans

A woman wearing Vakul, a traditional headress used for planting root crops. Photo by George Tapan.
The core essence of the magic of Batanes is the first-hand encounter with the Ivatans. They are proud of their culture and heritage – never arrogant and never apologetic about who they are. They lead simple and happy lives, and they are always willing to help and go out of their way to assist you. The true spirit of Bayanihan – where people help each other out (ex. for building houses or preparing for a special occasion) – is still alive in their communities. They celebrate life to the fullest and they generously share this positive energy with the people they meet.
Through the years, Batanes has been able to successfully preserve its magical beauty. Now, it's just waiting for you to discover it. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4139/4806757199_571e778e62.jpg

DEA awards P5 million to six drug informants

Six people on Friday received a P5-million reward money from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) for their help in catching suspects in the illegal drugs trade.

The anti-drug agency granted the reward to the six individuals who took part in the agency's "PDEA Operation: Private Eye" during its eighth anniversary celebration.

"These concerned citizens provided vital information that aided PDEA and other drug law enforcement agencies in the conduct of anti-drug operations against high value targets," said the PDEA in a statement, without identifying the individuals.

Nine government officials also received the "PDEA Director General's Award" during the celebration. They include several lawmakers such as Rep. Roque Ablan, chairman of the House Oversight Committee on Dangerous Drugs, and Sen. Vicente "Tito" Sotto III, former chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Board.

During the celebration, PDEA director general and Senior Undersecretary Dionisio Santiago highlighted his agency's accomplishments ever since it was created in July 30, 2002.

Earlier, the PDEA landed as spot on the "Top 10 Least Corrupt Agencies of the Philippine Government" based on a 2009 Global Competitiveness Survey Report.

"This feat is unusual for a law enforcement agency, but our continuous cleansing of ranks and anti-corruption initiatives catapulted us to the height of positive public perception," he said. –VVP, GMANews.TV

Arroyo to attend her 1st House session Monday

Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will attend her first session at the House of Representatives on Monday, her spokesperson said.

"Yes" was Elena Bautista-Horn’s reply to GMANews.TV on Friday when asked if Mrs. Arroyo will be present in the session next week.

Mrs. Arroyo was absent at the opening session of the 15th Congress on Monday, when her successor, President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, delivered his first State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Mrs. Arroyo left the country Sunday to accompany her husband, former First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo, to Hong Kong for a medical checkup.

The Arroyo couple returned to the Philippines late Wednesday night. [See: Arroyo, husband arrive from HK after 2-hour delay]

On Thursday, Horn, also Mrs. Arroyo’s chief of staff, said the Arroyo couple will be returning to Hong Kong for Mr. Arroyo’s medical treatment.

“Pinababalik para sa additional test, kailangan po muli siyang (Mr. Arroyo) bumalik sa Hong Kong dahil may certain equipment na kinakailangan na doon lamang po mayroon na malapit sa Pilipinas," Horn Said. — LBG/ VVP, GMANews.TV

RP to hold tender offer for 100,000 MT sugar

The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) will hold a tender offer for the importation of 100,000 metric tons (MT) of sugar Friday to ensure sufficient supply in the local market, the agency's administrator said Thursday.

About 90 registered traders from various countries will participate in Friday's tender for white sugar starting at $850 per MT, SRA administrator Bernardo Trebol told GMANews.TV in a phone interview.

Trebol added that the bidding committee has already set purchase protocols to make sure that the tender is done "as transparent as possible."

The SRA earlier said that it was planning to hold a tender for 150,000 MT of sugar, but the Department of Finance approved the importation of only 100,000 MT, according to the SRA official. [http://www.gmanews.tv/story/196472/sra-to-hold-tender-for-150000-mt-imported-sugar]

The agency expects to ship all imported sugar by mid-September to cover the supply before the milling season opens, and to prevent sugar price spikes, Trebol said.

Local sugar prices, he added, have shot up by P2 per kilo in the past weeks as speculators expected supply to drop in the coming months.

He clarified that there is no shortage of the commodity in the country, that there is an inventory of 400,000 MT – enough to last for the next three months.

Sugar output this year is expected to drop by more than 6 percent due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, prompting the government to cover the shortfall with imported sugar.

Government data shows that the Philippines consumes about 2 million MT of sugar per year. —JE/VS, GMANews.TV

MMDA chief accuses 3 bus firms of payola

At least three bus firms had been giving monthly payoffs to unscrupulous Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel, the agency's newly appointed chairman, Francis Tolentino, said Thursday.

A report in GMA News' "24 Oras" identified the bus companies as St. Rose Bus Lines, Baliwag Transit, and Five Star Transit.

Citing information from Tolentino, the report said St. Rose and Baliwag paid MMDA personnel P20,000 every month, while Five Star paid P30,000 monthly. Tolentino said he may recommend to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) corresponding sanctions for these bus firms.

"My mandate here is to make the MMDA a model agency," Tolentino said.

Baliwag has denied the allegation, the television report said. St. Rose and Five Star, meanwhile, have yet to issue an official statement regarding Tolentino's accusation. - KBK, GMANews.TV
