HACIENDA LUISITA, Tarlac, Philippines—For P347, Laureto Cardenas accompanied his limping 76-year-old father to the manicured grounds of the Las Haciendas de Luisita clubhouse on Thursday.
Beside a large swimming pool, the Cardenases and hundreds of other farmer-beneficiaries formed long lines to receive their share of a P20-million initial financial assistance package the Cojuangcos offered the farmers as part of the compromise they signed on the hacienda during the past few days.
