Pinoy math wizards win 31 medals in SKorea

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino math wizards again showed their mastery of numbers by bagging 31 medals including 2 team gold medals at the International Math Competition (IMC) held in South Korea on July 25 to 29.

The entire Philippine team bagged 2 golds, 1 silver, 28 bronzes, and 11 merit awards, said Dr. Simon Chua, head of the RP delegation and president of the Mathematics Trainers' Guild-Philippines (MTG), and Rechilda Villame, MTG vice president.

MTG, an organization of math experts, trains Filipino students for math competitions abroad.

The two gold medals were won by Philippine Teams A and B in the elementary division of the contest, dubbed Korea Elementary Mathematics International Competition (KEMIC). They also won a bronze medal in the group contest.

“We are delighted about the great showing of our Filipino students in the contest,” said Dr. Chua.

Members of elementary Team A of the Philippines include: Jason Joseph Fernandez of San Beda College Alabang in Muntinlupa City, Kaye Janelle Yao of Grace Christian College, and Ma. Czarina Angela Lao and Vince Benedict Say, both of Saint Jude Catholic School.

Elementary Team B members, on the other hand, are: Raymond Joseph Fadri of San Beda College Alabang, Andrew Brandon Ong of Chiang Kai Shek College, Austin Edrich Chua of Saint Jude Catholic School, and Nathaniel Joshua Balete of Philippine Institute of Quezon City.

In the high school division, dubbed Korea Invitational World Youth Mathematics Inter-City Competition, Team A of the Philippines won a silver medal in the team contest. Members of this team include: Janssen Lawrence Chan, Michelin Ang, Camille Tyrene Dee and Sarah Jane Cua.

10. Kenneth Co - Philippine Science High School (Main)
11. Vance Eldric Go - St. Jude Catholic School

Team medals:
1. Elementary Team D: bronze in the team and group contests
2. Elementary Team C: bronze in the team contest
3. High School Teams B, C, and D: bronze each in the team contest
4. High School Team D: bronze in the group contest

Members of Elementary Teams C and D are composed of Magin Benedict Ferrer, Mark Davidson Cua, Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa, Sedrick Scott Keh, Gen Mark Tanno, Miguel Luis Rivera, Ramon Galvan III and Shawn Gabrielle Cabanes.

High School Teams B, C, and D are composed of Aldrich Aldwin Mayoralgo, Brendon Matthew Go, Julius Vincent Sy, Audrey Celine Lao, Hubert Yao, Keefe Collin Tan, Michel Brodeth, Mikaela Angelina Uy, Justin Edric Yturzaeta, Kenneth Co, Neil Jordan Chua Goy and Vance Eldric Go.

According to Dr. Chua, 604 elementary and high school students from 26 countries and territories joined the contest. Among the countries who sent delegations were China, Canada, Thailand, Australia, South Africa, Taiwan, and host country South Korea.

The RP team leaders and coaches are: Villame, Dr. Eduardo Dela Cruz, dean of the Arellano University School of Education; Robert Degolacion, Joseph Wee, Isidro Aguilar, Jonathan Glorial, Manuel Kotah, Rodello De Asis and Eugenia Guerra.

Overall champion at the event was China.

The Philippine team is scheduled to arrive in Manila at 11:40 p.m. on Thursday, July 29.
