2 more strong earthquakes strike off Cotabato

MANILA, Philippines - Two more strong earthquakes struck off Cotabato City on Thursday afternoon, almost the same spot where 3 major earthquakes were traced over the weekend.The first quake, measuring at magnitude 6.4, was traced 125 kilometers southwest off Cotabato City. It struck at 3:31 p.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported

The Phivolcs said that tremor was tectonic in origin and struck 615 kilometers deep.

It was followed by another tremor measuring magnitude 5.1.

The second earthquake happened almost in the same spot, and its depth was 621 kilometers.

The Phivolcs has yet to receive reports on how strong the earthquakes were felt in surrounding provinces.

On Saturday, 3 strong earthquakes struck the Moro Gulf off Cotabato City.

The first earthquake had a magnitude of 6.9. The 2nd and 3rd quakes measured at 6.7 and 7.1, respectively.

The first 2 quakes were felt at Intensity 2 in General Santos, Butuan and Surigao cities

The 3rd quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Tanjay and San Jose cities in Negros Oriental province, and Intensity 3 in General Santos City; Lingin town in Surigao del Sur province; San Jose and Hamtic towns in Antique province; and Irosin and Sorsogon City in Sorsogon province.

Phivolcs chief Renato Solidum had said that an earthquake that has a very deep source is unlikely to cause structural damages.

"Essentially, that large magnitude earthquake, which would come from a very deep source, the shaking it would generate at the surface will be much less because [of] the thick pile of rock that the energy will encounter as it moves into the surface. So it will not be damaging," Solidum explained on Saturday. abs-cbnNEWS.com
