World’s Largest Mango Found In Iligan City

Largest Mango Found in Northern Mindanao, Breaks World Record

Would you believe that the largest mango is found in Northern Mindanao particularly in Iligan City? Yes, this was proven during the “Pinaka” contest held at the SUNDAYAG 2009 that displays potential products for agribusiness in Northern Mindanao at the Capitol Grounds this city. The mango weighs 3.5 kilos with a length of 30 cms. and a diameter of 50 cms. The entry won in the PINAKA contest being the largest and heaviest commodity among other crops displayed. The largest mango was owned by spouses Engr. Sergio B. Bodiongan and Mrs. Ma. Socorro M. Bodiongan from Barangay Tubod, Iligan City.

Mrs. Bodiongan related that the mango tree was planted in the year 1992 and bear fruit in the year 1996. She said she got the seedling from her friend Mila Marquez who got a grafted “Florida Keitt” variety from Davao City.

During every harvest the average weight of the mango fruit ranges from 1.5 kilos to 2.5 kilos . The spouses never attempted to sell or make money out of their large mangoes but instead gave some to their friends, officemates and bosses. The spouses said that they wanted to share this blessing to other people who are always amazed of the size of the extraordinary mango.

But it came as a big surprise when the spouses harvested one mango last August 25, 2009 that weighs 3.5 kilos. The spouses admitted that in their harvesting history this is the first time that they got as large and as big as this mango that was displayed in the SUNDAYAG 2009. This prompted the spouses to immediately checked the website of the Guinness Book of World Records (GBWR) for latest record holder.

According to the website of GBWR the recent record holder came from Kailua -Kona Hawaii. The owner Collen Porter, 47 years old who is an aesthetician by profession at Kona Center of Facial Surgery owns the record breaking heaviest mango at 5 pounds and 7 ounces more or less 2.4 kilos making that of the spouses’ mango a new record breaking physical qualities. The mango of Collen Porter is a “Florida Keitt” variety where the spouses’ mango also came from the same variety. The “keitt” variety mango typically reaches two to three pounds when harvested. The spouses are very excited to become the next record holder of the heaviest and largest mango. They have been very busy corresponding with the GBWR through the internet and is waiting for the go signal for them to document the official measurements with experts as witnesses and with corresponding official certification from the experts themselves.

The owners of the largest and heaviest mango have travelled from Iligan to this City to share the knowledge and amazement to their fellow Filipinos. This is extraordinary and novel as this will be the first time the Philippines will break a record for the category of fruits in the GBWR. The spouses are thankful for the people who have assisted and have helped them in one way or another made known their record breaking largest and heaviest mango there is,
